Why not Barry Bonds?
He is a jerk.
He is a juicer.
He is a bad “team” guy.
OK, besides all that, why not Barry Bonds?
The Cardinals find themselves in a precarious position. The Birds are smack dab in the middle of a playoff run that nobody saw coming, their offense has become painfully stagnant, and the Cubs and the Brewers just acquired top of the line pitchers in hopes of pulling away from the pack.
Why not Barry Bonds?
I don’t like him either, but if you really think about it, he could be the answer. The organization has made it clear that they have no intentions of mortgaging the future by trading away top prospects for a short-term fix. There really isn’t anybody on the current roster you can trade in return for a player that will improve your team. The offense is clearly in desperate need of a pick-me-up.
Why not Barry Bonds?
It almost makes sense. Acquiring Bonds, doesn’t require the forfeiture of any future Cardinals. The Bird’s brass has repeatedly said that the money is there for a player that will improve the team. There is no doubt he provi

des a serious and dangerous presence behind Albert Pujols. Doesn’t that help your team?
Why not Barry Bonds?
I get it. The guy is one of the most unlikable people on Earth. Who cares? Baseball’s history is full of Grade-A Jerks. Bonds might even lead the list, but the guy can smash a baseball and that’s what this team needs. I’ll admit it, I would get jacked up to go the yard and watch a lineup with Ankiel, Pujols, Bonds, Ludwick, and Glaus. The addition of Bonds adds legitimate juice to the order. I would love to see pitchers throw to Pujols knowing that the all-time homerun leader was waiting on deck to take his crack at them.
Why not Barry Bonds?
The guy has been denied an opportunity to play by every major league team. You don’t think that provides a little motivation for an ego-maniac. I do and the best part is that it’s easy to do. Call his agent, give him the money, and 10 days later he’s in your lineup and now your lineup is scary. Sure Bonds is older, but you’ve got three other very capable outfielders to shuffle around. (Shu, Luddy, and Ank. See ya Dunc.) You know Tony can handle that.
Why not Barry Bonds?
Clearly, this idea will be almost universally panned by Cardinal Nation, but what

are the motives for this. If you want to win, if you want to catch the “hated” Cubs, if you want to capitalize on an unexpected start, do something about it. Think about this: There are two and a half months left in the season. This is not a long-term commitment; this is strictly a rental situation. Let’s not throw away the season because we don’t want to take a chance. Let’s roll the dice and see what happens. Let’s play the bad guy for once. It will add some excitement. Love him or hate him, you’ll watch. In less than three months you’re playing in October or it’s over.
