After last Sunday's loss to the Reds, FSN Midwest ran their usual post-game show. And without warning, we were treated to this scene.
For whatever reason, it was Eighties Night... at 3:15 in the afternoon.
Going into the first commercial break, Pat Parris showed off his crooning abilities by singing a remix (well…a “mix”) of “Ladies Night”:
"Oh this is Eighties Night, and the feeling's right - Come on Ricky! - Oh this is Eighties Night, oh what a night!"
He seriously sang that. On the air. For real.
Ricky said that he was wearing his actual rookie jersey, so that's why it was so tight (and displaying his anti-Ed Hochuli gun show). I'm not sure if that was true or if he was kidding. Nonetheless, wearing that was uncalled for.
As for Jack Clark, the astute baseball fans out there would point out that Clark actually never wore the powder blue jersey, as he only played from '85 thru '87, after the prestigious powder blue era in Cardinal history. Smartly enough, they mentioned that during the show.
And smartly enough, I changed the channel.
But that got me wondering, would fans welcome a powder blue comeback?
To get the pulse of Cardinal Nation (or at least the bloggers of Cardinal Nation), I e-mailed a panel of select experts. I asked: Would you like to see the Cardinals bring back the powder blues next year, a la the Royals and Blue Jays?
Here’s what they said:
Tim McKernan (not the barrel man, or figure skater): Personally, I would love to see them bring back the powder blue uniforms as an alternate jersey.
For the generation of fans in their 20s and 30s, those uniforms, while perhaps aesthetically horrific in some people's eyes, immediately bring back beautiful nostalgia.
I'm not sure how to make it work with the day game/Sunday alternate jersey thing that so many teams have going now... since it would be at home... but I'd like to see the powder blue brought back.
Daniel (cardinal70.com): No, no, a thousand times no!
Just because something happened doesn't mean that it should be celebrated in a nostalgic way. I've never thought blue was all that great in the Cardinal scheme of things anyway, but at least the navy blue of the caps is understated and reasonable. Baby blue was left behind for a reason - let's not bring it back!
Turd Ferguson (aka The Good Face on bertflex.com): Of effing course I would like to see the Cards bring back the powder blues. You’ve seen Albert in one, right? It’s almost enough to turn me [gay]. The Cards have to go 100%, though - jerseys and pants, with the red/white/blue bands around the sleeves, collar, etc. The Royals’ inability to commit to the full-fledged retro look is symptomatic of larger issues within their organization.
athooks (cardinalsdiaspora.com): By bringing back the blue jerseys I believe the Cardinals would be acknowledging their racist past and incite riots not seen since the
Rodney King trial. This vestige of un-equality is just the sort of shady past that the organization should look to abolish - not celebrate. Let's be honest, there wasn't a black guy or Latino that could do a better job out of the bullpen than Rick Horton? Please. If
we bring back the blue jerseys we're bringing back hate. And hate is not cool.
Two for and two against? Looks like I’ve got to be the judge here.
I’m taking the cautious approach and saying no, the Cardinals should not bring back the powder blues on a permanent basis. They’ve worn them on the road a few times over the past decade or so for “Turn back the Clock“ nights, but never at home. I can handle that, but not multiple times a year.
I’m definitely a big fan of retro jerseys, but the powder blues just don’t look good on the Cardinals. Although, I’ll use my public forum to kindly ask the Cardinals: if you ever consider bringing them back, please consult me as a “fashion expert.” Obviously I take this way too seriously.
