Rams Beat Chiefs 17-9 In Final Preseason Game
By Tim Klutsarits Friday, September 04, 2009

In a game that seemed like it would never end the St. Louis Rams defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 17-9 to win the vaunted Governor's Cup and end a productive 2009 preseason.  Next up for the Rams is cut-down day and then the Seattle Seahawks to open the 2009 campaign.  Although this game will certainly be forgotten about very quickly there were some positive and negative things to come out of this one.  Here is a look at what went right and what went wrong for the Rams....

What Went Right For The Rams

Turnovers: The one running theme that has taken place in this preseason is that the Rams have been very effective in creating turnovers.  Quincy Carter scored on a 28 yard interception return for touchdown and the Rams were +2 in the turnover battle.  If the Rams are going to be successful in 2009 they are going to have to consistently win the turnover game.  Their talent level is not going to be enough so they are going to have capitalize on other teams mistakes.

Cornerbacks: We all know that the cornerback position opposite Ron Bartell is going to be picked on throughout the first half of the season.  The Chiefs tried to do that and the Rams handled it pretty well.  Jonathan Wade was very active and had another good performance.  Justin King and Bradley Fletcher were a step back of Wade but also played pretty well.  Granted the Chiefs are not going to be setting the world on fire this year but it was a good sign.

Brock Berlin: I have been a huge proponent of Keith Null winning the third quarterback position but Brock Berlin has done everything right in camp and on the field this preseason.  Berlin was very effective in his time on the field against the Chiefs.  It will be interesting to see which way the Rams go with this decision.  Berlin has given them a lot to think about.

Victor Adeyanju: While the rest of 2006 was getting traded or released this week one player from the class of 2006 was showing why he is going to be a valuable member of the 2009 Rams.  Adeyanju was all over the field against the Chiefs and while his production is going to be mostly against the run it looks like he might be a contributor rushing the quarterback this year as well.

Ronald Curry: I think the Rams made the right decision on bringing Curry in here from the Lions.  Although his career has not been great it looks like Curry has come in here in the right frame of mind as has the capability of making some plays this season.  Curry had 3 catches for 40 yards on Thursday night and I would be surprised if he is not on the roster come next week.

Corey Parks: I don't know if Corey Parks will be here come Saturday but it was nice to see someone return kickoffs with a reckless abandon.  Parks was running north on all returns and was going as fast as he could.  That is something we don't get from Derek Stanley or Kenneth Darby.  Parks looks like he has some ability to return kicks.

What Went Wrong For The Rams

Big Running Plays: The Rams surrendered two huge runs to the Chiefs.  A 70 yard run to Dantrell Savage and a 41 yard run to Larry Johnson.  Teams should never get those types of runs in the NFL and certainly not twice in a game.  The Rams cannot afford to be soft on the run again this year and there are signs that the rush defense is going to have problems again.

Adam Carriker: Here we go again with Adam Carriker.  Carriker injured his shoulder in the game and reading between the lines with Steve Spagnuolo it does not look good.  In a career that has been consistently plagued by injury I don't how the Rams can afford to go much further with Carriker beyond this season if he can't get on the field.  The Rams showed this week that patience is not going to be long for players that don't produce and are making big money.  Carriker is being paid first round money and is not getting on the field.  That is a problem.

David Roach: I cannot believe that Roach will be here on Sunday.  He has been consistently picked on this preseason.  He has missed coverages and tackles and has frustrated me as much as any safety on the Rams since Jason Sehorn was patrolling the defense.

The Governor's Cup returns to St. Louis.  The parade down Market Street will begin at noon...ok maybe not, but it was nice for the Rams to have a 3-1 preseason.  As we know preseason records mean absolutely nothing once the regular season begins but the Rams at least appear that they will be competitive this season.  The Seahawks will be an interesting first test.  Cuts will come tomorrow or Saturday morning and it should be interesting to see which way the Rams go on some positions.
