If there is anything that I can say for certain about the St. Louis Rams in 2009 it is that the roster will be a constantly changing place for the entire season. The Rams continue to "tweak" the roster by adding wide receiver Ruvell Martin and linebacker Paris Lenon. To make room the Rams announced this morning that they were
releasing linebacker Quinton Culberson and tackle Eric Young.
Most Rams fans were concerned about the lack of depth at wide receiver and this move does address the depth at the bery least. Martin has had a couple of flashes during his past three seasons with the Green Bay Packers including a 7 reception 118 yard performance against the Bears in 2006. Martin was reportedly one of the toughest cuts to make at the end of training camp for the Packers according to Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch. This signing makes some sense because he is a big receiver at 6-4 220 lbs. He adds depth and size so that is encouraging.
The Rams signing of Paris Lenon is a little bit of a head scratcher. Lenon is 31 years old and with the direction the Rams are headed, by trying to get younger, it does not make much sense to sign a guy like Lenon. Lenon has bounced around in his NFL career playing with the Detroit Lions for the past three seasons. He is more of a middle linebacker and considered a good special teams player. My guess is that the Rams wanted more depth in the middle position and Culberson is strictly and outside backer.
The Rams cutting Eric Young is more of a numbers situation then anything else. They have liked Moore in the preseason and think he can contribute but when you are trying to make the numbers work someone has to go.
