Rams Embarrassed By 49ers 35-0
By Tim Klutsarits Monday, October 05, 2009

They say that good teams find ways to win and bad teams find ways to lose, but what happens when you have a horrible team that has no chance to win?  You have the 2009 St. Louis Rams.  The Rams who had long odds heading into today's game against the San Francisco 49ers did everything they possibly could to make sure they had no chance to win.  The result.....49ers 35 Rams 0.  Here is a look at what went down at Candlestick Park....

What Went Wrong

Offensive Line: Football is all about what happens in the trenches.  Today, the Rams offensive line should not have bothered even getting on the flight to California.  To say they were bad is an understatement.  Kyle Boller was sacked 5 times today and the offense could only muster 177 yards of offense.  There are no holes to run through and the quarterback has no time.  When you have as much money tied up in the offensive line as the Rams do it is ridiculous the output that they receive from that group.

Alex Barron
: I know the Rams won't cut Barron or release him at this point because of their lack of depth but they should.  Barron was benched by Steve Spagnuolo in the second quarter after his boneheaded penalty for lining up in the backfield.  From here on out the Rams need to have Jason Smith at left tackle (once he is healthy) and put Jon Greco at right tackle and find out what the two have to offer.  This is a lost season and enough is enough with Alex Barron.  Another wasted first round draft pick.

Kyle Boller
: I think Sunday's game in San Francisco should silence the drumbeats to run Marc Bulger out of town.  Clearly Bulger is not going to be the long term answer but Kyle Boller is well.....Kyle Boller.  He was under attack all afternoon and I understand that, but the throw he made into the waiting arms of Patrick Willis was one of the worst decisions I have seen a quarterback make.  You can't just wildly throw back
across the field like that.  Boller is not an answer either.  He most likely will be the starter next week vs. Minnesota but he is not going to be the second coming that some Rams fans were hoping for.

Special Teams
: A total failure for the special teams today.  Josh Brown missed a 51 yard field goal, Donnie Jones was awful for the first time in a Rams uniform, and the Rams special teams surrendered a touchdown on the horrible play by Quincy Butler.  In addition the one good play the special teams turned in, the 98 yard kickoff return by Danny Amendola, was called back on a penalty by Anthony Smith.  The offense is bad, the defense is bad and now the special teams are bad.

Pat Shurmer
: Before the season started the NFL had three offensive coordinators fired at the tail end of training camp.  It drew outrage from many around the league that teams would invest a whole offseason and then fire their coordinators on the eve of the season.  I agree that it is odd to fire coordinators before a season starts but when does the seat start to get hot for the offensive coordinator of a team that has scored 24 points in 4 weeks?  I understand that there are huge talent issues on the offense but you can't have an offense that is this non-productive and expect to keep your job....can you?

Turnovers
: The 49ers forced 3 turnovers and the Rams forced 0.  In most cases that is an automatic win for the team forcing the turnovers.  After doing a very good job in the preseason and in Seattle the Rams defense has disappeared in forcing multiple turnovers.  If they are going to win a game this year they are going to have to force some turnovers.

What Went Right:

Steven Jackson: I won't sugarcoat too many things for the Rams here but I will say that I am sorry that Steven Jackson is wasting his career with a horrible team.  He has developed into a true warrior at running back and is trying desperately to carry the team by himself.  The reality is he just can't do it.  His numbers don't do him justice on his performance.  He had 23 carries for 79 yards which is just OK.  But what those numbers don't show is how hard he ran and how few holes there were to even reach that 79 yard level.  If the Rams had 11 players playing as hard as Steven Jackson does on on offense they would be headed to the Super Bowl.  It is a shame to waste that kind of talent on this kind of team.

Defensive Line
: Much better today.  They reached Shaun Hill 4 times today and were constantly in his face.  Hill was only able to throw for 152 yards and they limited Glen Coffee to 74 yards rushing.  They were not perfect but they were much better then anything we have seen this season.

Donnie Avery
: Better today, and when I say better I mean he actually contributed to the offense today.  He is still nowhere near a number one receiver but he at least performed at a higher level today.

Things aren't going to get any easier for the Rams.  The Minnesota Vikings come to the Dome this weekend with all-world running back Adrian Peterson.  It will be another long week at Rams Park and expect the unexpected.  I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see some more shakeup in the roster before the next game.  Just when you think the Rams have hit bottom....
