Audio of Scott Spiezio's First Interview Since Being Released By The Cardinals
By Tim McKernan Thursday, January 29, 2009

Scott Spiezio joined us this morning on The ITD Morning After. It was his first interview since last February when the Cardinals released him.

To our surprise, Spiezio said he was actually clean and sober at the time of his release, but that the organization had to part ways with him because of the negative p-r surrounding the time following his rehab, Tony La Russa's DUI, and the death of Josh Hancock.

Spiezio says he's clean now, and that he still has strong positive feelings for the Cardinals. All he wants to do, he says, is take his kids down on the field at Busch Stadium so they can see where their dad played.

Interesting interview. Let me preface by saying a member of my family deals with addiction issues, so a lot of what Speezer was saying sounded familiar. Honestly, he seems like he still hasn't fully turned the corner. Every problem he had was overblown, or there were excuses, etc. I don't think he's really accepted the fact that what he did was wrong. As he discussed the Braves situation, he again was caught in a bit of dishonesty by first saying it was his decision to leave, but then admitted he had an issue. Also, he portrayed his stint as a volunteer at the homeless shelter as goodwill, but when in fact it was likely part of his community service. Good for him for doing it, but I'm just using it as an example of how he's still a little bit of the con man he was last year. I just don't think the guy has hit the bottom yet, and hopefully he doesn't. That said, I think he got a lot more honest towards the end of the interview.
