Timmy's Tidbits: Surprising Poll Results And October 8th=Best Local Sports Day of The Year
By Tim McKernan Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Editor's Note: I know some people don't count Columbia, Missouri as part of the "St. Louis" sports scene. However, much like the University of Illinois in Champaign, the University of Missouri has a large portion of fans in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Hence, I count it.

Yesterday's From The Desk of Tim McKernan poll question asked the question, "What are you looking forward to most this weekend?" And, the options were the Rams-Packers, Cardinals-Rockies, Blues-Stars pre-season game, and Missouri-Nevada.

To my absolute surprise, the Missouri-Nevada game took nearly 60% of the vote. The Cardinals-Rockies took second with 25%, and then the Rams-Packers finished in third...just eleven percentage points higher than a Blues' pre-season game.

While I, as a Missouri "graduate," am looking most forward to the Tigers' game in Reno, I'm surprised 60% of our readers would choose it over the Cardinals-Rockies...or Rams-Packers. But, that's an illustration of how far the program has come...and how far the Rams have fallen.

So, with that said, I'd gather Thursday October 8th will be the biggest sports day of the year around these parts. The Cardinals will play Game 2 of the NLDS either here against Colorado or in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. The Blues open up the home portion of the 2009-10 schedule against the Thrashers. And, Missouri hosts Nebraska in a Thursday night nationally televised game.

Ideally, the Cardinals are at home with a 1-0 lead going into Game 2 and Adam Wainwright on the mound in a day game. Then, you either get to head down to Columbia or the Scottrade Center for the festivities...or just hope picture-in-picture is working.

#1 event I'm looking forward to is the NFL game here in town. Yes, we still have the NFL and it's our home opener. This is the league that is most popular in the US and second most popular in the world. Yet in our town, it's not. I know some of it is because of mismanagement of the franchise but c'mon folks, its' the NFL. A world-class city like London is salivating over procuring a franchise yet in our river-rat town, the NFL simply doesn't register on the radar. I'm sure the dirt-track racing in Pevely will be packed on Sunday though..

Bad NFL football is way better than NO NFL football in this town.

Problem is, most of the people who voted on that pole have no idea (or memory) of what those 7 years were like where there was no football in this town (1988 - 1994) What a shame. Appreciate it while you got it St. Louis, because you're starting to give the rest of the country a pretty good indication you don't give a damn about the NFL in this town.

Then, that white elephant that you bitch about (the Dome) during every NFL season will sit empty except for tractor pulls and motorcross races in the future. This town is such a front runner its pathetic . . .

I don't know how you can blame people for rather watching winning teams than the shitty local NFL team. I'm a huge Rams fan; I've watched virtually every game since they moved here. Still, I'd rather watch the Tigers right now... and that's who I would have voted for. Even though, you can bet your ass that I'll be watching the Rams on Sunday, too.

I would rather have no NFL than the Rams, never been a fan & never will be . . that's why I purchase the NFL Sunday ticket so I can watch other NFL teams . .
