Update From The Las Vegas Airport
By Tim McKernan Tuesday, July 08, 2008

The End

I write to you from McCarron Airport, where I immediately bolted to after getting knocked out.

I will recap the hand in greater detail, but here's how it went down.

Jeff Bryan, the pro to my right, opened up and raised to $1,800. I had pocket 4's. I called the $1,800.

Everybody else folded.

The flop came off 4 (club) 7 (club) 8 (spade).

He leads out and bets $2,500.

I raise it to $7,500.

He calls.

The turn comes off 6 (spade).

He leads out and bets $25,000.

That's right $25,000.

I put him on an overpair or a flush draw with top pair. My tournament life is on the line, and I call him.

He turns over 5 (spade) 8 (club). He has the straight.

I still have some outs if the board pairs.

But, the river comes off 3 spade.

That's that.

As you can imagine, I'm incredibly disappointed. In hindsight, it should've been obvious that he hit the straight...and even if he didn't, with $30,000 chips still left, there was no reason to call. He could have had a higher set, a flush draw, or the straight. He also could have had an overpair, but I should've known better.

I really should've.

People may criticize his play with a 58 offsuit, but the reason you play 58 offsuit is to break people off with a huge pot. That's why Jeff Bryan is a pro. That's why he won $330,000 last year at the Main Event.

I see two mistakes with my play.

1. I should have raised much more than the 5k I raised after the flop. That was a big mistake. With a flush draw on the board, I should've raised more...much less the opportunity for a straight.

2. I should've laid it down...obviously. He outplayed me by overbetting...with the hopes that I'd either call with the set or bet me off the flush draw...and the overbet was there to make me think he didn't have it. It was a great play...and I completely blew it.

It's one thing to get bad beat. It's another to get outplayed. I got outplayed, and I couldn't be more disappointed in myself for allowing it to happen. If I bet $10,000 to $12,500 on the reraise post-flop, he lays his hand down. I fucked that up. And, the call was a piss poor as well.

I really apologize to everyone who had been pulling for me throughout this whole thing. I feel like I let people down. I was playing my game. I really was. And, then I just flat-out dropped the ball.

Thank you again for all the emails showing support and wishing me luck over the last week. It meant a hell of a lot. I really wish I could've brought it home for everybody.

Unfortunate, man. It's very hard to play your game 100% of the time. Although I'm upset you lost, I'm glad that I don't have to listen to Andy Strickland for the rest of the week. Props to the guys who kept us up to date throughout the day.

Tim,

Again, sorry you got knocked out. Don't beat your self up about it. So you got outplayed on a hand, it happens. Even the pros make mistakes brother. I'm sure all of your fans that have been following your trip are proud of you and the fact that you made it this far. Look at this as your practice year. Now you know what to expect and you can go get 'em again next year.

Dpn't worry about it. If it makes you feel better, you're not that good at radio either.

Tim:

Like everyone else, I too have been following your progress. Seems like Thursday was a hundred years ago. I could hardly wait until today - was refreshiing pokerwire and Insidestl all afternoon at work to try toget updates. I can't wait until you can post some additional thoughts on the hand.

Here are some questions I have:

1.) How had Bryan been playing throughout the day - loose, tight, like a pro???

2.) What was your stack going into the hand - it seem like it must have been about $30k? How were the stacks of the others at your table?as your stack compared to the other stacks at your table?

3.) Based upon how Bryan had been playing, what did you put him on pre-flop? Raise of 3x's BB seems like typical raise.

4.) Did you consider pushing pre-flop - maybe a re-raise to $5k (about 3'x his bet)? How long did you you take to make the call?

5.) How excited were you when the 4 hit on the flop? How long did you take to raise to $7,500? Did Bryan seem hesitant to call the raise, or did he call right away?

6.) When the 6 hits on the turn and he bets $25k, how long did you take to go all in? Did you run through all the possible hands - perhaps putting him on suited 9 10? Did what you thought he had pre-flop change after this $25k bet on the turn?

7.) Did the $25k bet have you covered, or did you actual have a small raise on top of his $25k - obviously, he was going to call your all-in.

8.) Just trying to picture that moment and what was going through your head - how much adrenaline was pumping, did you take time to count out your stack before making the call, did you look at him to see if you could get any information, did you ask him anything (you got an overpair?, you on a flush draw?, do you want me to call?) or were you just tying to keep from knocking over your stack as you pushed it in?

9.) What was the walk out lof the room like? How much did you want to go back and re-play that hand.

Again - great job. I hope to get to play with you some day. Perhaps, we could get some InsideSTL private tournaments on PokerStars.

Have a safe trip back!!

Confusion at WSOP

From Pokerwire - 8:22 CST

2008 World Series of Poker
39th Annual World Series of Poker Main Event

Bold Bryan

Tim McKernan raised to 2,400 from under the gun and it folded back around to Jeff Bryan who made the call from the big blind. The flop came . Bryan checked, McKernan bet 12,000, and Bryan called.

The turn was the . This time Bryan pushed out 20,000, and McKernan folded. Bryan has moved up to 185,000, while McKernan has 27,000.

Is Tim still in? Was it a prank? Or did someone sit in Tim's seat and lose a pot to Bryan?

Bryan goes all in pre-flop. Oppponent calls. Kenny Tran says he likes Bryan's hand.

Flop - Q x x
Turn - 10

Bryan claps and is happy. Kenny Tran says you just jinxed yourself - he no longer likes Bryan's hand.

River - J

Opponent makes broadway straight.

Yes, Tim. You did let us all down. And I, for one, will NEVER accept nor consider any attempts at ammends that you may make.

Seriously, you gave us all the cheap thrill of living vicariously through you for a few days. So what's to apologize for? You'll learn, regroup and get better for 2009.

Thanks for the ride, compadre!

By Chris @ Tuesday, July 08, 2008 10:18 PM
Hey Tim,
For what it's worth I'm not a huge fan of poker...don't play much....don't watch it at all. However, I was pulling for you so much and really appreciate your passion so much that I just found myself at 9 o'clock at night checking pokerpages.com searching for your chip count. Sorry it didn't work out like you would have wanted but your listeners really enjoyed the ride and I think after some time you will feel the same. It's better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all. Keep your chin up and keep bringing heat.

By @ Tuesday, July 08, 2008 10:34 PM
Sorry it has turned out this way. I admit I know nothing about poker, in fact I totally suck at it, but I do believe that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and this amazing opportunity you just had will make you a better player.

By Imaspy @ Tuesday, July 08, 2008 11:02 PM
If all these guys who know nothing about poker wanna learn, I'm all for teaching ya....

Tim, restrospect is the curse of cards man. Yes, in retrospect, you fucked that up. But in retrospect I'm a fucking genius every single time at the table but have only managed one win in about 25 tourney's with just 15 fucking guys in it. Geez, maybe I shouldn't teach these guys.....

Question: Will the interest in the site possibly someday justify you being in the tourny as a business expense?

By Trooper McCue @ Tuesday, July 08, 2008 11:04 PM
After reading your post, it sounds like you choked.

Good one.

Loser.

I wonder how many message boarders will hang themselves, now that their opportunity to live vicariously through you has vanished? I bet the over/under is like 6.

Now that I think about it, some of these folks "really" like you. You may want to consider just giving them their kool aid now....

By rhunter @ Tuesday, July 08, 2008 11:11 PM
Hey dude if you weren't choking on Andy Dicks balls last night, you would of still lost! I just made out with your wife at Ice & Fuel in Kirkwood.

By John Robinson @ Tuesday, July 08, 2008 11:17 PM
Assuming the guy you laid down AA to was telling the truth, you probably were subconsiously thinking pocket 4's were the magic hand! Oh well in hind sight for an online player you still did very well and out lasted several pro's and bracelet winners! With your experience and our previous conversations I have no doubt that you will be back next year and eventually cash at the Main Event! Good Stuff Timmy.............your pocket Aces lay down was sick!

By Kris Nalley @ Tuesday, July 08, 2008 11:18 PM
Good jod buddy! It was alot of fun knowing somebody in the WSOP and being able to follow them as well the the toury itself. Sorry to say to say I would have also done the the same thing you did on that hand. Damn man you had a set heads up! Know just more practice and lets do it again next year! Also if you look at it look how many pros were out before you this year! Go to world series of poker web site and look! You did AWESOME!

By Ben Hofmeister @ Tuesday, July 08, 2008 11:27 PM
Congrats on the effort and it was cool to go through the experience with you but, shit happens. Chalk it up to that and give it a shot next year. Otherwise, you will have to step up on your anniversary and if it were me, I'd rather get my ass kicked playing poker. Love the show. Thanks!

By scottyb @ Tuesday, July 08, 2008 11:55 PM
Nice run man; however, playing close to the vest (and cautiously overthinking every play like you have this entire tourney) couldn't possibly have resulted any other way. You should've/could've lost/doubled on those pocket AA's in the first round. Convincing yourself that folding those was the right move is exactly what got you as far as you did. Convincing yourself that you played the hand correctly is exactly what sent you home today. Congrats on a hell of a run, but sometimes you just have to have the balls to go "all in" on shit - much less on 3 of a kind on the flop.

By mbarlow @ Wednesday, July 09, 2008 12:21 AM
I have never wanted you more.

By Gary McNary @ Wednesday, July 09, 2008 1:12 AM
Tim,

Why don't you head on back to Vegas guy. Maybe you can kidnap some other bald short guy that still has some chips and pretend to be him for the rest of the tourny. You can tie up the other dude and let Andy Dick have his way with him in your hotel room while you play. You wouldn't even have to wear that gay pokerstars racing jacket anymore either.

P.S. Did you happen to bring back one of Andy's thongs? I would like to wear it on my face and sniff it every night til I fall asleep.

Thank you all for the comments. I seriously really appreciate it.

The comments here and the emails I've gotten have been kind of overwhelming. They actually make me feel worse...because I wanted to come through for people.
