InsideSTL Concert Calendar - August 2012
After taking a one month break we are back with the August edition of the InsideSTL Concert Calendar. Hopefully you didn’t miss out on some of the great shows like El Monstero, Mayhem Festival and Dave Matthews Band at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater or the sold out Old Crow Medicine Show and Tenacious D shows at The Pageant that would have filled out our July version. Here’s a quick look at some of the shows hitting St. Louis in August and beyond.
Yet again you can click the name of the artist and it will link you to the Facebook event page for complete details. Don’t forget, this is just a small look at the great music hitting St. Louis every night, so check with your favorite venues for more great shows happening. If we forgot a show you are looking forward to, please leave it in the comments!

Mike Birbiglia
Stand up comedian that has recorded three specials for Comedy Central, had cameos in multiple major Hollywood films, and wrote, directed and starred in two different one man Broadway shows, including one that turned into a NY Times Best Seller and Sundance Award winning feature film called “Sleepwalk With Me.”
Thursday, August 16
Meek Mill
Saturday, August 18
The Chris Robinson Brotherhood

The Black Crowes frontman has teamed up again with a project he’s been toying around with on and off for the last ten years, now officially known as Chris Robinson Brotherhood, who just released their debut album Big Moon Ritual in June. Robinson has been touring with Bob Weir and Jackie Green as part of an acoustic trio recently and is now back with his psychedelic jam rock buddies for a nationwide trek. CRB stopped by Blueberry Hill last fall and it sold out pretty quick, this time they are bringing their sound to The Pageant stage. Expect to have your face melted off with Robinson and Neal Casal’s guitar battles.
OLD ROCK HOUSE
Thursday, August 2
The Black Angels
Call them what you will, psychedelic, garage rock, experimental or indie... the fact remains that this Austin, Texas four piece kicks some serious ass. The Black Angels have been featured on Eastbound and Down, True Blood, and House in addition to many other shows, commercials, and movies including a song on the Twilight soundtrack (but don’t hold that against them). Check out their newest NSFW video, “Entrance Song” and grab your tickets for this one, it’s sure to be a great show (and probably packed)
Thursday, August 9
Chiddy Bang
I saw Chiddy Bang back in 2010 after winning free tickets and ended up really enjoying them. Since then the drummer/producer and rapper combo have released a handful of mix tapes and a studio album.
Friday, August 17
Pepperland (Beatles Revue)
Tuesday, August 28
Phish After Party w/ Dr Fameus (of the Disco Biscuits)
Thursday, August 30
Brendan Benson (of The Racounteurs)
The co-founder of The Racounteurs NOT called Jack White takes the Old Rock House stage. Brendan Benson has roots in both Detroit and Nashville and it certainly shows in his music. Benson has been releasing solo albums for the last decade or so, and with his newest effort out on his own label and a recent collaboration with country singer Ashley Monroe led to a Raconteurs tune gone bluegrass, who knows what this show will bring.
VERIZON WIRELESS AMPHITHEATER
Wednesday, August 1
Zac Brown Band
Country mega stars Zac Brown Band released their newest album last month. Uncaged, which debuted at #1 (shocker), is described by Brown as a "country-Southern rock-bluegrass-reggae-jam record", which sounds just like a Zac Brown Band live show.
Thursday, August 16
Sublime with Rome
Monday, August 27
KISS and Motley Crue
2720 CHEROKEE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Friday, August 10
"REMEMBERING JERRY TOUR"
Featuring Terrapin Flyer with Grateful Dead keyboard player Tom Constanten and members of the bluegrass jam band Cornmeal.
Friday, August 17
SOJA + Josh Heinrichs
SOJA has been playing surburan reggae rock for 10 years, and they are pretty good at it. Think Sublime if they smoked way too much pot and only played mellow, super postive songs. Josh Heinrichs, formerlly of Springfield, MO based reggae rockers Jah Roots, is very similar and this show should provide some great Friday night vibes at one of the most unique venues in the city.
Friday, August 24
Oakhurst
OTHER PLACES AROUND TOWN
Thursday, August 2
Crosby, Stills & Nash at Fox Theater
Friday, August 3
TASTE THE WASTE A Tribute to Ween at Off Broadway
Recently Ween co-founder Aaron Freeman, or 'Gene Ween', announced that after 25 years, Ween was done. This was news that shocked many in the Boognish community... including Mickey Melchiondo. Why does he matter you ask? Well, Mickey just so happens to also be known as 'Dean Ween', the OTHER co-founder of Ween. Dean Ween denied Gene Ween the breakup. Uhhh... what? So Ween may or may not be done... regardless, Ween played some of the weirdest music you will ever hear, and its also a thing of absolute beauty. You may or may not remember "Push Th' Little Daisies" from early 90's MTV, but you may not be familiar with such hits as "Don't Shit Where You Eat", "Touch My Tooter", "Bananas and Blow" and "Spinal Menengitis (Got Me Down)." A Ween tribute band interests me... the vocals are going to be tough to immulate for sure. I hope its good, because I don't want to imagine a life without Ween.
Tuesday, August 7
Summerland feat. Everclear, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, LIT, Marcy Playground at Family Arena
Holy crap my older sister would FREAK. Get out your plaid and bring back the under cut, its time for a 90's rock extravaganza!
Wednesday, August 8
My Morning Jacket at Peabody Opera House
The band responsible for my #1 show of 2011 returns, and they have moved on up from a sold out Pageant to the beautiful Peabody Opera House. My Morning Jacket (right) provides a high energy, balls to the wall rock show. MMJ was without a doubt one of the loudest shows I've ever witnessed.
WARNING: Jim James haunting vocals may provide an out of body experience at the Peabody. Their most recent album, Circuital was also featured on InsideSTL's Best 50 Albums of 2011 list
Saturday, August 11
Wanda Jackson at The Duck Room
Saturday, August 11
Toadies & Helmet at Pop's
Monday, August 20
Murder By Death at Plush

LouFest Music Festival 2012 at Forest Park
The 3rd Annual LouFest will feature two full days of music on two stages, and features headliners Girl Talk (Saturday) and The Flaming Lips (Sunday). Alternative icons Dinosaur Jr. make their return to St. Louis, in addition to Son Volt featuring Jay Farrar of Uncle Tupelo. You can get all the info on LouFest here
Saturday, August 25
Lyle Lovett at Peabody Opera House
Tuesday, August 28
Phish at Chaifetz Arena
You hate Phish? Oh man... Well what Phish songs have you heard? Oh really, nothing? Its just not your thing? Thats interesting. I also hate things I don't understand. All kidding aside, this is a pretty entertaining read on the legend of Phish. They have a very large, dedicated following of good people willing to travel hundreds or thousands of miles to see them play music night after night after night. But they get a lot of heat from another slew of folks that think they are just a hippie band and associate them with the "bad years." Phish are far more than that, and since making their comeback in 2008 they are starting to get back to the "back when they were good" Phish.
Tuesday, August 28

Bassnectar at Chaifetz Arena
Its time to break out your glow sticks.... its time for a Saturday night Dub-Step party! I never got Bassnectar... but a wise man once said to me at Wakarusa that "Bassnectar makes the booty drop". That is all you need to know I guess

Tuesday, October 9
Alabama Shakes at The Pageant
This band is awesome. A bit of the blues, some soul and some straight up rock and roll, Alabama Shakes are blowing up right now and this show WILL sell out. Their Bonnaroo set this year was highly regarded by many as one of the best of the weekend. I'm predicting this one has Show of the Year potential.
Monday, October 15
Norah Jones at Peabody Opera House
Fri/Sat December 28 & 29
Leftover Salmon - 2 NIGHTS! at Old Rock House
