Week One of The Friendly’s Football Picks of The Week
It’s time for another year of The Friendly’s Picks of The Week.
Producer Joe, Denny from Friendly’s, and I will go at it every weekend from now through the Super Bowl and guide you to wagering glory.
Each week, we’ll give away a $25 gift certificate to whoever picks the most winners in the comments section below.
Producer Joe, Denny, and I will give our picks on mutual games and one Lock of The Week.
Last year, I “won” by going 66-65.
Not exactly inspiring.
Got to win it again…but got to do better.
It starts today. Woot.
Murray State at Missouri (-38)
Producer Joe: It's good to be back into gambling season. Sure there were plenty of soccer games over the summer to keep things lively & of course there were baseball games, but this is the official start of gambling season. For just about every single day between now and the beginning of January there will be a football game to wager upon. I am off to a slow start in soccer this fall. Started out the EPL season 1-3 so I am full of confidence entering football season obviously. Oh, soccer bet, yeah, take the over of Manchester United/Liverpool on Sunday morning. Pick: Murray State (+38)
Denny: Pick: Missouri (-38)
Tim: I want to believe that things will be different this year. And the fact that the Tigers are coming out of camp healthy this season as opposed to the mess that was last August’s injury problems is encouraging. But, I’m hearing some things from those in the know that make me a little concerned. 5-0 to start the season is realistic…albeit unlikely. I’d be happy with 4-1 to start. That “one” won’t be Saturday night in Columbia. But, I don’t think they cover the monster spread. Pick: Murray State (+38)
Alabama (-21.5) vs. Virginia Tech (in Atlanta)
Producer Joe: I am going to go out on a limb here.....Bama is going to win the National Championship this season again. Bold claim I know. It will start in Atlanta on Saturday evening and it will be a blood bath. VA Tech is from the ACC. Bama has won 3 of the last 4 National Championships. The math is fairly simple. SEC > ACC. And 3+ TDs isn't enough to scare me off this game. Love the Tide. Pick: Alabama (-21.5)
Denny: Pick: Alabama (-21.5)
Tim: Pick: Alabama (-21.5)
Georgia (-2) at Clemson
Producer Joe: Have done a lot of reading lately on Dabo Swinney and he seems like he would be a hell of a coach to play for if you had to settle for playing at an ACC school not named Florida State. That won't be enough to pull the big upset at home on Saturday though for the Tigers. Georgia has the best pure passer in the conference and one of the top 2 running backs in the conference as well with Todd Gurley entering his sophomore season between the hedges. There will be a bucket load of points scored in this game but the Dawgs begin their campaign with a road win and cover as long as Mike Bobo, Aaron Murray and Mark Richt (who has been a head coach for 13 years now) can figure out how to clock a damn ball when needed. Simple math once again SEC > ACC. Pick: Georgia (-2)
Denny: Pick: Georgia (-2)
Tim: Pick: Clemson (+2)
Mississippi State at Oklahoma State (-13.5)
Producer Joe: I don't really have a feeling one way or another except for the fact that if I were a Mizzou guy I would rather have either of the two head coaches in this game coaching my team over Gary Pinkel. I don't think Mike Gundy is realistic but I do think that Dan Mullen could be had after this season if everything else breaks the right way. There isn't another coach in the conference on the hot seat after 4 new hires entering the league (Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee, & Arkansas) besides Gary Pinkel. And how hot his seat is remains to be seen. But in terms of Mullen being able to move up the ladder in the best conference in the country there really isn't anywhere for him to go at this point....except to the Eastern side of the conference with Missouri. I think he has taken Miss St. as far as he can take them & I think if the right offer were made he could be had. Right now he has to catch LSU & Alabama for the top spot and Ole Miss is the best school in his state (with a great freshman class already in place). Missouri would be a much better situation for him. Just my thoughts on it. Coin toss game for me, but I take the SEC on this one too. Pick: Mississippi State (+13.5)
Denny: Pick: Oklahoma State (-13.5)
Tim: Pick: Mississippi State (+12.5)
LSU (-6) at TCU (in Dallas)
Producer Joe: The Bayou Bengals aren't losing back to back games to non-conference opponents Ain't happening. Dallas is going to smell like corndogs all weekend long. This completes the SEC sweep of games with another cover for the league against a non-conference opponent. Pick: LSU (-6)
Denny: Pick: LSU (-6)
Tim: Pick: TCU (+6)
Lock of The Week
Producer Joe: Boise State at Washington (-3): I am terrible with Locks of the Week. Take this with a grain of salt. Pick: Boise State (+3)
Denny: Northern Illinois at Iowa (-3): Pick: Iowa (-3)
Tim: Toledo (+23.5) at Florida: Unlike @ProdJoe, I do pwn Locks of The Week. Pick: Toledo (+23.5)
