Your Nominations For The 2012 insideSTL Year-End Awards
Editor's Note: As the year wraps up, we'll do some looking back here on insideSTL.com. For the purpose of the discussion, even if you fucking hate Missouri or fucking hate Illinois, the scope of the St. Louis sports scene extends from as far west as Columbia, Missouri to as far to the east as Champaign, Illinois. We'll include the Cardinals, Rams, Blues, Missouri, Illinois, and Saint Louis University.
…it was easy.
When it came to handing out the Worst Moment In St. Louis Sports, The Best Moment In St. Louis Sports, and The 2011 St. Louis Sportsperson of The Year, the country’s best baseball town had numerous moments from the best World Series in 10 years to choose from…many of which were performed by hometown hero and eventual obvious Sportsperson of The Year, David Freese.
…yeah, it’s not going to be too easy.
I’ve had this discussion with a few people, and perhaps---I want to emphasize the perhaps---with the exception of the Best Moment, there’s no clear winner for any of the categories.
At least I don’t think there is.
But, this is in your hands. You get to post your nominations below---please post five nominations for each category---or you can email them to me.
Maybe there will be an overwhelming amount of support for a moment---bad or good---and/or a person for Sportsperson of the Year.
For my money, it’s wide open.
A couple of things to make clear for the purpose of these “awards” is a moment is just that…a split second. Not a game. Not a series. It’s a moment. And, put yourself in that moment and remember how you felt…not knowing what the future would hold.
For example, last year’s Worst Moment was Josh Hamilton’s Game Six 10th inning home run. In hindsight, it was harmless. In the moment, it was the biggest kick to the balls in 2011.
And, deaths are out of the mix for any of the Worst Moments. To think, for example, that Phil Pressey’s desperation shot to avoid first-round elimination at the hands of Norfolk State should go ahead of the passing of Rick Majerus strikes me as absurd. So, for the purpose of the “awards,” deaths are out of the rankings.
Here’s a look at our past winners…since we started doing this in 2010:
Worst Moment-2010: Joe Thornton’s Hit On David Perron
Worst Moment-2011: Josh Hamilton’s 10th inning Home Run in Game Six
Best Moment-2010: Gahn McGaffie’s Kickoff Return Against #1 Oklahoma To Start The Game
Best Moment-2011: David Freese’s Game-Tying Triple in Game Six
insideSTL Sportsperson of The Year-2010: Sam Bradford
insideSTL Sportsperson of The Year-2011: David Freese
So, with the deep history of these awards now out there for your viewing pleasure, please either submit your Top 5 in each category (Worst Moment, Best Moment, and Sportsperson of The Year and rank them one through five). You can do so by putting them in the comments section below, or you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. You have through Wednesday to submit them, as the Worst Moments will go up on Thursday, Best Moments will go up on Friday, and the Sportsperson of The Year will go up a week from today.
