It's a cruel sport.
Baseball is like a girl you've so done with who decides to change for the better juuuuust enough that you don't dump her. But at a certain point, you're going to realize that it's all pointless and that she was pretty much a wench for stringing the whole damn thing out way longer than it needed to be.
Wins like last night against a good Atlanta Braves team give people hope when they should have none. 4-4 games with 2 HR's from a petulant talent erase memories of rational people. Baseball is doing all the things that you know deep down won't make a difference for the Cardinals. But here we are. Trying to convince ourselves that the inevitable isn't coming. That the season isn't over.
It is. It's over. And we should know better.
The 2010 Cardinals are one of the most unlikable group of players we might have ever had in St. Louis. The same team that took a playoff contender behind the woodshed at home where they are superb is that same team that's going to go out and completely shit the bed tonight. And the same team that's going to win just enough games to make sure that you can't completely just focus on football. It's completely frustrating and hard to pin down on one specific thing.
Frankly- it fucking sucks to be a Cardinal fan.
Granted, we're not Pirates fans. Or Royal fans. But I think that most of us have a real appreciation for just how great Albert Pujols is and how not making the playoffs 3 out of 4 years during his really prime years is such a waste it makes you throw up in your mouth just saying it out loud. But the stark reality is that if the Cardinals didn't get lucky backing into the playoffs in 2006, it'd have been 5 good years since the Cardinals fielded a team that could compete for the championship. And that other teams have done far more with far less of a starting point than the best player, perhaps, ever.
Couple that with the fact that we've had high expectations of the Cardinals and they've underachieved and now you have fans like me and you wondering not only what went wrong this year... but if this team is so far off track that we're kind of delusional about the whole deal. I mean, we do have 3 players that were CUT by other teams. THIS SEASON. So that can't be good. We've also got a guy that never played 2nd base as a pro trying to be a second baseman and another highly touted prospect wanting to get the hell out of town.
I'm trying to find the silver lining in 2010- but I really can't.
And I can't shake this feeling that the Cardinals are further down the path of needing a complete overhaul more than they're close to a team that needs a couple of parts for a World Series run. Then again, with 3 great starters, Holliday and Pujols- how can that be? Really, how can that be?
Cardinal fans are fucking loyal to a determent. Most of them are sticking with the 'it's not over until it's over line' and that's fine. They're probably tired of my shit anyway. But I think it's time to take a good hard look at this team this off season and decide just what the fuck is this. What moves need to be made? And do some of them need to be drastic?
Blow the whole thing up?
You're call. What do you do?
