So I went and got myself a physical yesterday at the docs office. My BP was 151/87...ie pretty bad. Easy ways to lower this? I have started eating better and I'm working out 4 times a week starting last week...so I'm off to a good start. Any foods that actually lower it?

Exercise of course, but green tea also helps lower blood pressure. You'll be surprised.

Drain out about 2 pints before you have it tested - then go to the bar.

i have started drinking more and more water. working out in the mornings/afternoons has given me more reason to stay away from soda bc it dehydrates me so much more. and salads have become my new lunch fixture.

not married....but will probably end up engaged by May. I just started a new job in Columbia 2 weeks ago, so I'm thinking that stress of that has my BP up too

cut the salt
soda- out
smaller portions, more fresh fruits and vegtables... emphasis on fresh
water
exercise regularly
cut the alcohol
find a quality stress reliever which leads me to the next suggestion
sex, lots of quality sex.

not a bad idea to talk to the doctor about a prescription BP medication as well.

My doc told me that your BP won't hurt you now. Maybe later. Live it up.

Chinese green tea and ginseng. Seriously...Chinese green tea (preferably long jin) is like a magical potion that does wonders for you. Boots immune system, lowers blood pressure, aids digestion.

I have that stuff on an IV drip...

or you can go the scientific route and take atenolol daily.

Hope you're not looking at one reading and hitting the panic button. There are many possible reasons for that reading. You could have been stressed more than normal that day, or felt rushed getting to your doctor appt., you could just have a little normal anxiety a doctor visit sometimes brings. It's never a bad idea to do all the things other posters are suggesting, i.e. limiting sodium, caffeine, alcohol, etc., and exercising more is great. But you should probaby get a monitor if you haven't and check it a couple times a day before you go on meds. You can get a decent monitor for $40. You should be at rest for about 5 minutes before you check it, and don't eat, drink or smoke 30 minutes before you do. Your BP will also tend to be high in the morning, as it rises when you're asleep. Your average reading over an extended timeframe, i.e. a couple of weeks is more indicative of your actual blood pressure than just the odd reading here or there. Good luck.

Sounds like he had some health issues, and he wasn't a small fella either. While I didn't know him, nor have I ever met him, still this is shocking.
