I would like your opinions on what you think a reasonable amount for allowance is.
My son is 11 and his chores will vary day to day from laundry to dishes, etc.
I feel like 5.00 a week is not quite enough but jumping to 10.00 is too much.

I would give each chore a dollar value
Say $1 for each chore and give him different amount of chores for different weeks

A) Good to see you in the transition.
B) Get some hot ass chick in your avatar stat.
C) Go with five dollars, build in some special projects or other things to do for extra money if he wants and treat it like a "job". After a while at 5 ,give him a raise of a buck if he is doing well. Continue until you get as close to 10 as you feel comfortable.

Well if he's not happy with $5.00/week then you should offer him $20.00/month. See what he says. Or you could just give him like $25.00/month.

Room and board are plenty. Never let them forget it's your house and your rules.

Wow, my titties are worth a 2 1/2 hour drive and chores??? SWEET!
I would give each chore a dollar value
Say $1 for each chore and give him different amount of chores for different weeks
How would that work w/ laundry? $1 per load? I spend more than that just doing it in the frickin apartment complex. It's also a pain in the ass to go up and down those stairs constantly
Minimum wage (whatever it's at right now)
I'm not sure where it's at either but if it is ... say... 5.25 I would end up paying him 21.00 just to clean his room. The boy is a slow mover.

A) Thank you! I've been sick so not around much this week.
B) Will do. Just for you.
C.) This is a pretty good idea, thanks again.

this is what my parents did, I want to be a little bit nicer

he would probably fall for that for about 30 minutes, then be like... "hey, wait a minute!!!" 25-30 a month isn't a bad idea either.
Thank you all for the suggestions so far!

My parents gave me $10 a week when I was 14. I am now 30, so accounting for inflation and the age difference I would say $75 a week sounds good.
Seriously though, I agree with the thought of assigning each chore an amount but weekly should not get more than $10. It should give him an incentive to do the chores since the reward is greater if he does more.

Why not just give him $25.00 a month as allowance, not tied to chores. Those are the things he has to do as a member of the family, regardless of pay. Then if he fucks up you can take away the allowance, and still make him do the chores.
That's what my rents did, and I've only been in prison once.

I feel like allowance should be an opportunity for kids to practice managing money, and not so much paying them for chores they should be doing anyway. Having said that, I made $5/week when I was a kid. In high school my mom paid me $25 a week to do a thorough cleaning of the entire house, on top of my normal chores.

i'm with Cheezy...if not a way to manage money, at least save it.
What about $10 a month - BUT, he gets $5 , and you keep $5 to save for him.
He can keep track in a notebook to know how much he has...that way, he's getting a decent allowance, practicing management, and saving.

He's done really well with saving his money, he usually has something he wants to save for. He spent about 40.00 on fireworks and still has money left. There is also a fair coming up that he is saving for.
Management is definately a good thing to teach... God knows I wasn't taught.

The Rockefeller kids were taught money management this way. They had an allowance, and half of it was theirs to spend, and they had to invest or save the other half how they chose.
