Has anyone done the bar top with the resin, where you can put stuff like old game tickets, bottle caps, Hot Wheels, etc. under it? If so, is it a pain in the ass?

When I build my bar (after I get a house), I have one of those translucent glass blocks with a Mizzou logo. I would like to put the block in the front of the bar with a light behind it.

I've seen it done with epoxy (I think). Pretty simple. Just mask off a barrier that you want it to sit in and pour away. Let it level itself. Use a blowtorch to draw any air bubles out.

That is what I'm going to do. I've heard it isn't bad at all. Just mix, pour and it self levels. Just have to make sure and pop any air bubbles as the come w/ a hair dryer or butaine torch.

My buddy did a table like this for his barn with old bottle caps. I believe he said it was pretty easy, but you have to be quick with smoothing it out because it dries quickly. It looks really cool, but your arms and shit stick to it though.

Hey Spoon, I talked to a guy that I know that has been doing woodwork semi-professionally for several years. He's made bars and other types of tables with a thick epoxy surface. I asked him what he uses and he said he uses this stuff (your picture above). From the work I've seen, it's very very durable and clear as glass. Michael's does sell it, but you can get a larger 128oz kit from the following website:

http://www.paintprosusa.com/

Edit: I think someone on here mentioned pouring over some old ticket stubs or baseball cards... he recommended testing a small bit of it first to make sure the ink on the paper stubs or cards doesn't run.

no you leave a half inch space away from the concrete. bottom is treated.

thinking about finishing a part of mine off so the kids can go destroy the downstairs instead of making my house look like my room when I was a kid.

It looks great.

That looks really good, Spoon.

Also, I understand that you're not supposed to use a vapor barrier in below-grade basements for the wall insulation. You need to let the moisture "breath" instead of trapping it between the concrete and plastic.

Thanks. Yep on the vapor barrier. The insulation backed is just to prevent any extreme occurance that would happen to keep the drywall from damaging. the vapor can get thru still.

Nice job Spoon, did you buy plans or come up with your own? Do you have running water and a drain into it? Did you take out any permits? I am finishing my basement, but I used metal studs, much easier than wood and cheaper.

I have plans, but changed them a ton. The plans were for an L-shaped with some big differences. I have running water and a drain that is taped into the main stack behind the chiefclock.

Where did you get the metal studs? They seem more expensive from the big box stores.

I worked on it off and on while I was doing other stuff on the basement and at a casual pace. Probably 2 months?

I'd guess if I worked on it constant after work I could do it again in a few weeks.

I have a cabinet maker coming next wednesday to give me a quote to build one in my basement. After all, what is a bar other than 1 big kitchen cabinet/countertop? He builds all his stuff from scratch.

He's probably going to give me a quote for like, $5,000. I'll choke on some spit, then kindly ask him to leave and scratch "Build a bar" off of my list.

dude...if you want to go that route, do this method (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=777621&page=10).

You just frame the front and add prebought cabinets as the back second level.
