We had a major roach problem the last apartment I lived in college, but luckily I made them take care of it before we were really moved in. Like they were in the cabinets and shit. They came and sprayed some stuff to draw them out, and then again to kill them all. I was cleaning up carcasses for like a week and it stunk like shit from that spray for what seemed like the whole semester.

When I still lived at home with my parents, they would have wolf spiders in the garage/basement all the time because they lived out in the country. It was fucking horrifying.
There's still an outline of the legs and body of one I smashed against the concrete in the basement that easily was 10" across from the tips of it's legs, it curled up and was the size of a ping pong ball when I smashed it.

They are skittish, but if you do get bitten, they are poisonous.
It seems like I have to post this about once a year. Here goes again. Bnub's layered approach to a bug-free home:
1: Get the Ortho Home Defense MAX granules. These are tiny particles that you shake around the foundation and landscape rock against your home. They fall into the tiny crevices. Once moisture hits them, they expand into the cracks and leave the insecticide residue behind.
2: Get the Ortho Home Defense MAX spray. Lay down a layer of spray at the base of your foundation, and if you can, at the bottom edge of where your siding meets the foundation. Then, lay down a layer at the TOP of the house exterior- where the siding meets the roof. As well, circle any windows and spray INSIDE any exterior bathroom exhaust vents and dryer exhaust vents. These are notorious entry points.
Also, spray several zigzag patterns on the garage floor. Even though the insecticide evaporates, it leaves a barrier on the ground. Once bugs cross it, they die.
3: If there are any tree branches or bushes touching the siding of your house, cut them back. This is how a lot of ants and spiders come in.
4: Lay down an interior perimeter. Along the baseboards, windowsills, etc. The insecticide will stay long after it dries, but it keeps a barrier. Again, once a bug crosses that barrier, they die. So do the perimiter of rooms and windowsils.
5: Basements are their favorite spot. Any crevice or nook in your basement, spray. Especially in any basement bathroom.
This takes me about 3 hours, but I only have to do it twice a year. Rarely, and I mean rarely, do we get any bugs in the house.

id suggest going with this before calling an exterminator. you have seen one spider and you are ready to pay a professional to come out? this shit costs like $25. you dont really need to do everything bnub said, but you could and still save a bunch of money.

We saw a bunch of those house centipedes in the basement & I saw 2 spiders in the 2nd floor bathroom.
I called Midnight's reccommendation today, they're going to spray the whole house for $80, that seems pretty nicely priced.

I do something pretty similar to this every year and we don't have much of a bug problem. The occasional one here and there. I don't spray around the top of the exterior or garage floor though. Might have to add that to my ritual this year.

The underside of my roof overhang is perforated, so it's an easy opening for them to get into the roof. From there, there's several ways for them to get from inside the roof to into the house.
The garage is the most frequent entry point though. It doesn't seal fully shut, is often left open, and has plenty of spaces for bugs to hide. Once you start spraying the floor, you'll notice a shitload of dead bugs that only made it 3 feet in. The first week I did it in the summer it was crazy how many actually came in (and subsequently died).

I used to have spiders really bad around the garage door. They wouldn't get in the house, but you'd come home at night and there would be 6 spiders hanging down trying to make webs. I sprayed the Ortho Home defense Max spray jug dealio around the door and by the next morning there were dead spiders all over the driveway.
Guess it works.
Ever since then I spray the perimter of the house twice a year.

I put down some of the granules last weekend. Two days later I go out and see all this brownish black shit along the sidewalks next to the house. I look closer and realize it is dead ants. Probably about a billion of them.

Typically, those nasty fuckers only come out of their homes when they are irritated or are about to die. We had an infestation back when I first moved into my house. we had Rottler out to check things out and he noticed and then showed me what I should be looking for. At the time, he told me that there was little in the way of sprays that would take care of em and instead used an irritant powder that he applied into the attic and certain parts of the basement and garage. He also laid glue traps all along the baseboards throughout the house. I kept finding these dead bastards over the next couple of months stuck in the traps. I have since only seen one or two and it is already dead.

yeah, im no expert on these spiders, but i thought they wouldnt be found in beds. its just not a place they would end up normally. you have to imagine in the middle of a room, with light, and a dry bed would not be where a brown recluse would be hanging around.
True. They do tend to keep to "reclusive" areas as their name suggests. But that doesn't mean that they don't wander around at night, looking for food.
I've also had a pretty large one approach me while I was in the laundry room in the basement. This guy crawled towards me from the corner of the room. I moved to the side and he adjusted and kept coming at me like he knew that I was responsible for his buddies being killed in the glue traps. He didn't last much longer as I squished him with a broom.

wtf?!
check to see if the spider is brown and smooth with a violin-shaped pattern on its back. If it fits this description, the spider is most likely a brown recluse spider. These spiders are very poisonous, aggressive, and they enjoy hiding in soft places like the arms and legs of clothing, bedding, or pillows more than any other spider in missouri.

You can also tell if you have them by the white spider-shaped shell they leave behind. I found out that these spiders are similar to snakes in the way that they grow. You will tend to see what looks like a white spider in a cob-web. It is really just the residual outer shell/skin... whatever.

i found this article/website http://www.angelfire.com/film/darkroomduck/HTML_PAGES/brown_recluse.html
which housed this in it
I caught the common Jumping Spider (Phidippus audax) which is black with a white dot on top of its abdomen. I prepared to add the Jumping Spider (JS5-2-04) to the list of Brown Recluse victims and dropped it in the jar with BR2-11-04. The Jumping Spider pounced on the Brown Recluse once then attacked again grabbing it by its throat until it was dead.
It's important to become slightly sidetracked and study the Jumping Spider considering its important characteristics. My theory is that this spider is very important as a household friend especially in the instance of a Brown Recluse infestation. The jumping spider is superior tactically to the Brown Recluse with its jumping ability and obvious excellent eyesight. A person could conceivably live with the fact that introducing a jumping spider in the house is better than a brown recluse infestation

We've had this smell like a dead animal in the house for three days, which is great really. I figured it's coming from the HVAC vents so I looked in them with a flashlight and a mirror and couldn't see anything. I had an exterminator out yesterday to look for the varmint. This dude pulls up in a PT Cruiser and steps out of his dipshit mobile wearing a pink polo and cargo shorts. He doesn't have a ladder so I'm following him around the house carrying one of mine like his apprentice.
He looks in a few vents and says "man that's enough to knock you over". Later we're in the finished part of the basement and he pokes his head up in one ceiling tile and says “There are a lot of droppings up here". He hands me three glue traps and says "If you've got the day off it'd be a good project to pull these tiles down, pull the insulation, clean up all the droppings and set these traps".
When I pulled the downstairs couch and put down a tarp for Jimmy Buffet the exterminator consultant, I discovered I've got a water leak in the foundation… so now I get to pull down walls and rip up carpet as well.

Hey yo. The first thing I would do about the water leak is check the grade of your yard or whatever that butts up to your foundation. Most foundation leaks are caused by poor water drainage. You can't really expent concrete to be water tight. When i was refinishing my basement, I found that the one wall was kind of damp after a good rain. Turns out the dipshit that lived there before me rain drain pipes down into the yard and just stopped. Burried them in dirt and called it a day. So after I properly ran the drain pipes, no more damp wall.

If the leak isn't too bad, I would recommend, A) grading the land around your house like I said, and then B) give your walls a nice coating of Dry-Lock paint. That stuff does a pretty good job at keeping the moisture out.
I did Pergo type flooring in my basement. It was very easy to install, and it's very durable. It's got an alumina (I think) coating that makes it almost indestructable. It actually makes your saw blad spark while cutting it.

Six feet under the foundation, under the first floor pad.

I like Pergo in basements. Tile would get pretty cold.
12 x 7? Shiiiiiiiit... you could bust that out in a day. Wouldn't cost all that much either. Check Home Depot and Lowes. They have some good looking stuff. I got mine at ProSource b/c I have a hookup with an account there. I think I paid like $1.27/sqft. You should be able to find some good stuff around $2 to $2.50 / square.

Like I said, a small area in front of the TV and up to a good architectural break in the wall

I liked the selection at Lowe's for the laminate flooring.

don't listen to cards....laying heating coils under tile is easy. If you're capable of laying tile, you're capable of laying heating coil under it first.

Then what do you do, huh??? Just plug it into the magic hole in the wall??? Huh??? No. You have to make sure there's a receptacle near buy or install one yourself. Then you have a big dumb plug coming out of your floor!

I came home yesterday and there were a few of these beetle things on the inside of my back door and I was like WTF? So I opened it and there is like 50 of them in the door jam. On all four sides of it and all over the outside wall of my house. I was pissed because it came out of nowhere. Went and got some spray and killed the shit out of them and made like a barrier all around the door with it. Shop vacced those carcases up.
They were black with red or orange on their back. Not like a lady bug, they were bigger and were mostly black instead of red.

Those should be right up your alley. I believe they are Asian beetles.
