If you click "Quick Links" at the top-right of the page, private messages is on the bottom of the resulting menu under Misc.

It shows them in the upper right hand corner of the screen, but may not show up until you get your first one.

also you can have a little popup come up to tell you, all you ahve to do is enable it in the usercp

You have to go into quick links and edit options to allow private messaging. Then it shows your status in the upper right hand corner under your name
