I must be a sap, because I felt the same thing. Not too much of a stretch on these shows when someone leaves and their character/the actor gets emotional.

I think I was just sad because the show is going to suck hard once he leaves. Those writers have pushed Jim and Pam into a corner with no way out.

Last night he was ok but they haven't spent any time flushing out his character, kinda necessary when we know so much about the others on the show. She's part of the group of people that write most of the episodes, right? That Ryan Howard dude writes quite a bit as well.

Totally agree or the "romance" is a hot mess, which is entertaining. Similar concept used on Seinfeld to good effect.

I blame Friends with the whole Ross/Rachel deal, they ruined network TV situational comedy.

I have been completely underwhelmed by Ferrell's character. I'm so used to him playing an over-the-top character that seeing him play this more-reserved character just doesn't seem to fit.

That trend continued. That shit jumped a giant shark last night, if it hadn't already. I laughed at some parts, but watching the stuff with Rice was painful and the whole storyline with Jack's wife...ugh.

I thought it was good. Not looking forward to the focus being Will Ferrell now. The storyline with him and Andy and the cake thing were stupid.

I thought Michael's departure was great, very well done. While it went down a pretty obvious path, Dwight reading the letter followed up by paintball was perfect. I loved the Toby scene, because his gift to him was clearly to just not insult him no matter what. The Jim/Michael scene...yeah, that was real between the actors.

Ferrell has been a disappointment and I am a huge fan of him in almost everything he does. Just not working here. However, yelling "NO!" at the cake did crack me up.

But see the Brits have it figured out, because a bunch of their shows are like that. However, I believe that they make shows for the sake of entertainment and not just to squeeze every last penny they can out of it.

I have never, ever understood why a drama can't come out and say..."This is a self-contained 3 year storyline...enjoy!" All comedy shows should have a 4 year maximum length. It works abroad...but here a show runs itself into the ground until no one cares any longer.

I like Andy because he's one of the more well-developed characters. If you think about it we really don't know anything about Jim, Pam, Stanley, Meredith, Creed. But with Andy we know he comes from rich parents and went to Cornell and was in the singing group in college and has anger issues. He's a bit more fleshed out. In his interviews he talks a lot about his childhood and college. I wonder if that's improved stuff the actor chose or if it was written into the script.

Agreed. I think they reached their creative plateau about three seasons ago. It was hit or miss for a couple of years with some good shows and some clunkers. Then I thought last year's season was pretty subpar. I think it's time to retire it to syndication.

I'm still not caught up on this show. It's hard when each season has 22 - 25 episodes.
I don't know exactly where I'm at, but I'm at the part where Holly comes back because Toby has jury duty & her & Michael get back together & then move in w/ each other. I have to say that the whole Holly / Michael thing is super annoying. I don't like the Holly character at all.

It wasn't terribly funny, but as I've said, I think it's tough when making an episode like that for it to not be more emotional/sad than funny. I still got some laughs...both of Michael Scott's lines were perfect.

Yep. The last couple of seasons get really bad, imo. It was time to end it and I think they did a good job with it. I know it definitely falls below Seinfeld and Arrested Development for me, but can't think of too many other shows.

When Andy becomes the boss and they essentially have to write him off the show because it was painfully unfunny at times, is what I'm talking about. Oh sorry, not technically but I guess you have not made it that far yet. Like I said, just my opinion on it...but I've read that even some of the writers knew it had gone way down hill and they knew it was time for the end. Losing Mindy Kaling as a writer probably didn't help.

I've enjoyed watching the last few episodes. I thought the show had run its course last year, which I thought lacked any sense of direction. I never got into the Robert California storyline. Nelly was a stretch too, IMO. And then this season's Andy Bernard hiatus and then meltdown was stretching the show's boundary to the point of lunacy.

But I thought the latter half of this season was pretty good stuff. It seemed to get back on track of some of the original intentions of the show, and the last two episodes were a good mix of funny and needed closure for the multiple story lines. Carel's appearance was brief, but that was by his choice. He didn't want to upstage the existing cast, he had already gotten his send off. I wish he would have allowed a little more Michael to be written into the script... oh well.

Someone on reddit spoiled a major part of the episode and people are flipping the fuck out. It's pretty great.

For some of us (myself included) the Office provided humor, comfort, and tradition, and now it's over after 8 seasons. It's clear that you never had that connection with the show, and that's fine, but acknowledge and respect that for others it was more than just a sitcom.

I think the brilliance of the show was taking the incredibly mundane and funding humor and heart. But with any show, if it's on for long enough the story lines get wackier and the characters become more and more like caricatures. It happened with a lot of the great long-running shows. Seinfeld got really silly at the end.

The Pam and Jim storyline got played out for a while, but I thought, while not funny, was written well as a finale. I didn't mind when their storyline was center, if it involved the other characters. For example, their wedding episode(s)...I was fine with it because the rest of the cast was still able to be funny. For a while, they turned into just those two, and it was sappy and not funny.
